Politics and Law

Another day, another racist comment from the Tory party

Philip Clarke poses with 'blacked up' Emma Pentreath

24-year-old Philip Clarke who serves as an aide to a Senior Tory peer became part of the latest Tory fiasco after racist images were posted on the internet social networking site, Facebook.

In one of the pictures, Clarke is seen posing with constituency office researcher, Emma Pentreath after she allowed her face to be blacked with a burnt cork. The caption under the picture read: "Emma's career in politics lies in tatters after she follows Ann Winterton's lead and dresses as a 'N***** Minstrel' for the Tory Black and White Ball." Another caption read: "The piece de resistance! Teeth shining, nostrils flared and eyes glowing. Truly terrifying!" in an allusion to the racist stereotype of African people as savage monsters.

Clarke was suspended from his post and conceded that he had “behaved very stupidly”. Despite the long and staunch history of racist policies and comments from the Tory’s, a spokesperson for the party went on to make the bizarre claim that “racism is completely unacceptable and had no place in the Conservative party.”
