21-year-old Robel Tewelde shot dead in south London

On Tuesday 2 October 2007 at approximately 11.50pm, the body of Robel Tewelde was discovered by police in Jephson Court, Studley Road in Stockwell following reports that shots had been fired in the area. He had been shot three times in the back and emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene. His 19-year-old brother was also found nearby suffering from serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
The two brothers of Eritrean origin had reportedly been running from two or three men with guns when they fled up a stairwell and were attacked. The brothers had been with five other friends when they spotted a group of men approaching them in a menacing manner and decided to run away. Robel was killed days before he was due to start university.
Ngosi Edwards, 18, from Hemans Road, Lambeth and a 17-year-old boy from Clapham, who can not be named for legal reasons, appeared at the Old Bailey charged with Robel’s murder. Both deny the charge. The 17-year-old is also charged with possession of a gun. The trial date has been set for 16 June 2008.
