Violent racist trio ailed for murder of South African farm worker

Apartheid in South Africa still remains part of life with Africans banned from areas labelled 'whites only'

On Monday 25 June, Kenneth Broodryk, Frederick Dunn and Schalk Nel were found guilty of murdering father of one, Welile Motawane who had crossed into the “whites-only” section of Broodryk’s Sunset Lodge near Rustenburg, South Africa in 2003.

Welile, who had been previously employed by Broodryk, was subsequently confronted, stripped, tortured and killed by the trio who beat him for four hours. High Court Judge, Ratha Mokgoatlheng described their actions as "callous, calculated and inexcusable". They also tied up Welile’s hand and feet, poured petrol over him and put a tyre around him. After the ordeal, they took him to a police station and attempted to accuse him of robbery. On seeing the condition of Welile who was badly beaten and bleeding, an officer ordered them to take him to hospital but they ignored his suggestion and instead drove him to his home 35km away were he was found dead and partially clothed the following morning.

Broodryk was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment whilst Dunn and Nel were sentenced to 10 years. All three men, who regularly attended the Dutch Reformed Church, showed no sign of remorse for their actions and denied murdering Welile. Welile’s fiancé, who is the mother of his 7 year old daughter, was in court to hear the verdict.
