Crime and Injustice

18-year-old youth worker, Nathan Foster shot dead in Brixton

Nathan Foster with his one-year-old son, Raheem

Nathan Foster was killed on Friday 3 August 2007 in Marcus Garvey Way after a man on a moped approached the group of young people he was with and opened fire. Nathan had been attempting to resolve an alleged dispute between a group of young people after a chain was stolen. The gunman, whose chain had been taken, is believed to have returned to the scene with a weapon.

Nathan and his partner, Rochelle had celebrated the first birthday of their one-year-old son, Raheem a few days earlier. He had been working on a Lambeth community project designed to assist young people with their homework. He was also a talented equestrian and had been working at the Ebony Horse Riding Club in Coldharbour Lane which teaches inner city children to ride horses. Founder of the club, Ros Spearing said: "Out of 200 kids learning to ride from Brixton no one has ever come near to his standard. He could have gone on to equestrian college because he was that good at riding. He made a decision that he was more interested in working with young people."

Nathan’s mother Vanetta Bell, 52, paid tribute to her son: "I can't cry any more tears than I have. It's such a horrible thing to have to bury your own child. Nathan was a gentle, sweet boy - never in any trouble, never involved with a gang or any bad people. He was dedicated to working with children and he loved horse riding. I don't know how anyone could do this over a stupid gold chain. This man must be caught. If he can shoot someone because of a chain then he will do it again."
